Greetings Parents, 

I hope everyone had a wonderful Spring Break and has had the opportunity to rest and recharge. As we head into the year’s final stretch, it is hard to believe it is already April! The PTA is hosting a book drive this week, and a donation box will be in front of the school. In addition, I will hold a Coffee and Conversation focusing on Social Emotional Learning at Laurel Ridge on Tuesday at 9 am.

STAFFING UPDATE

We will welcome Coach Ellington to our staff Monday. He comes to us with a wealth of background knowledge and over 30 years of working in health and wellness. He has taught PE in elementary, middle, and high school settings. He has also taught adaptive PE. He will be a great addition to our Laurel Ridge family.  

We will also welcome our MTSS Specialist, Mr. Weaver, to our building the following week, April 17, 2023. He has worked in DeKalb County for eight years and has supported many clubs and initiatives. He has a background in exceptional education and will bring a wealth of knowledge to Laurel Ridge. He will be here to help both students and staff.

Please help both of our new staff members have a wonderful welcome to Laurel Ridge. 

UPCOMING EVENTS:

April 11th- Coffee and Conversation with Ms. Hartman- We will tackle Social Emotional Learning at Laurel Ridge. This will include how we support diverse student needs, teaching in a trauma-informed manner, and a conversation about discipline and conflict resolution in the school. 

April 13th- PAC Meeting at 4:30pm

April 18th- Laurel Ridge Art Show and International Night- A Celebration of Cultures 4pm -6pm 

Ms. Shellnut has been working with all students to create International Art Pieces, and the PTA will host an International Night. The PTA website and newsletter have more information about how to get involved.

May 4th- STEM Night and Science EXPO-

Laurel Ridge will celebrate STEM learning together. We will have STEM leaders from local organizations, universities, and businesses to share the many ways Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math are in the world around us. Laurel Ridge students can participate in the Science EXPO.

Honor’s Day: 

Please be advised of the Honor's Day times for the end of the year. Each grade level will have a short performance, and all students will receive an award. Please make sure to mark your calendars to celebrate with your student. 

May 22nd Honor’s Day: Grade 1-9:30am, Grade 2-10:20 am, Grade 3-11:10 am, and Grade 4 12:45 pm

May 23rd Honor’s Day: PreK 12:30 pm (in the classroom), K 8:30 am, and 5th Grade 10:00 am

 

BUILDING UPDATES:

Spring Break Construction: 04/03-04/08

Over the Spring Break, the windows building project continued. The team completed the new front doors and the back panel of windows near the basement. 

 

DISTRICT UPDATES:

The DeKalb County Board of Education has selected a sole finalist for DCSD Superintendent, Dr. Devon Horton.
